As part of our luxury food tours in Montmarte, your expert guide will meet you directly at the tour location, or at your hotel should you choose the transportation option.
Throughout the experience, your private guide leads us into Montmartre’s unmistakable charm: winding streets, hidden staircases, village-like squares, and historic cafés once frequented by artists, writers, and free spirits who shaped the neighborhood’s creative soul. Long known for its strong sense of community and tradition, Montmartre is home to cherished bakeries, food artisans, and specialty shops that continue to define everyday Parisian life.
It is here, in this vibrant blend of heritage, craftsmanship, and Parisian art de vivre, that your gourmet journey begins. Please keep in mind each tour is unique, although below are some of the stops you may experience on your Food Tour.
Our journey may begin at a traditional boulangerie, where the aroma of freshly baked bread sets the tone. We may taste classic French staples such as a crusty baguette or buttery viennoiseries. Together we’ll learn how to recognize a truly great baguette from its golden, crust that crackles when pressed, an irregular open crumb inside, and a deep, wheaty aroma. Still baked several times a day in France, the baguette is protected by tradition and made with just four ingredients: flour, water, yeast, and salt.
From there, your guide may take you to one of Montmartre’s many specialty épiceries fines, often family-owned businesses that have become a warm site in the neighborhood. These shops proudly champion French-made products, working closely with small producers and artisans from across the country. Inside, you may be welcomed by friendly shopkeepers who are eager to share stories, tasting tips, and personal favorites, whether it’s a peppery olive oil from Provence, a delicate fruit vinegar, or a herbal or citrus liqueur. More than just a tasting stop, these épiceries offer a glimpse into traditional and trendy French cuisine and are the perfect place to find distinctive, delicious souvenirs.
Depending on the day and the flow of the tour, we will settle into a local Parisian brasserie to enjoy a classic French entrée, such as French Onion Soup or house made Foie Gras, served in a warm, neighborhood setting. Alternatively, if the moment feels right and the sea is calling, we can visit a welcoming oyster bar, where freshness and simplicity take center stage. Tasting oysters sourced from renowned French coastal regions is best enjoyed with a lemon slice and a glass of crisp white wine. This stop offers a briny, refreshing contrast to the rich flavors of Montmartre’s traditional landlocked cuisine and a chance to discover why oysters hold a special place in French culinary culture.
A staple of French society is the small specialty shops that thrived for centuries before the arrival of big grocery stores. We will step back in time to enjoy a visit to a beloved fromagerie, where cheese mongers might introduce you to exceptional French cheeses, sharing insights into terroir, aging, and tradition. With over 1000 varieties of cheese, there is flavor for everyone!
We’ll pop in a nearby boucherie artisanale which offers another essential glimpse into French food culture, showcasing carefully sourced meats and classic preparations that have defined Parisian cuisine for generations. Together we can pick up some charcuterie, like the popular saucisson sec, or a fine pate/terrine, usually made in house!
No French food tour would be complete without wine. Our journey may include a visit to a wine shop or cave à vin for a brief, approachable introduction to French wine. From dry to sweet, red or white, we will learn how to taste, compare styles, and better understand France’s renowned wine regions by locals who sell this French staple for a living. Celebrated around the world for its quality and diversity, French wine is also a delightful Parisian secret, because here, a bottle may often be far more affordable than it tastes!
Toward the end of the tour, we can enjoy a private sit-down experience, offering a relaxed moment to slow down and savor the products you’ve collected along the way. In a comfortable, reserved setting, we may share cheeses and charcuterie, taste gourmet finds from the épicerie, and enjoy a final sip of wine together.
This unhurried pause allows everything to come together in a convivial yet intimate atmosphere, a chance to reflect on what we’ve discovered, ask final questions, and enjoy Montmartre’s way of life, just as locals do.
With each stop, both the planned highlights and the spontaneous discoveries, the neighborhood opens up even more, revealing the authentic, flavorful, and endlessly charming world of Montmartre. Your guide’s deep knowledge, personal connections, and years spent cultivating relationships with local artisans allow you to experience the neighborhood in a way no standard tour ever could.
