Versailles has filed a complaint against X Monday after seeing the disappearance of a painting signed Baron Gérard, does on Tuesday from sources.
The disappearance of this unique piece, a small format entitled ” Portrait of Count Regnault de Saint- Jean d’Angely ,” was reported Feb. 14 by the staff of the Versailles castle.
The direction of the Castle does not confirm that the painting has been stolen but said that this complaint is ” a standard procedure to protect a work of a possible return to the market .”
This piece was kept in an accessible reserve. But according to initial investigations, this painting has not been seen since February 2010.
Then lost or stolen? ” Works of art are often subject to movement , said a spokesman of the castle. They can be moved and to be restaured ” and get lost.
The Police of Versailles and the Central Office for the Fight against trafficking in cultural property are responsible for investigating.
Known to be the author of the portrait of Napoleon, ” The Emperor in his coronation robes ” (1805 ), François Gérard ( 1770-1837 ) , said the Baron Gerard, was the official portraitist of the imperial family and the painter dignitaries Empire and foreign sovereigns.
This painting belongs to a series of sketches of portraits of the Comte d’ Angely , its value is ” difficult to estimate ,” said a spokesman for the castle, but according to another source it would be around 100,000 euros. The castle houses 60,000 works in its collections.
